Free bank statement converter: what 'free' really covers (and where it stops)

"Free bank statement converter" is one of the most searched phrases in this corner of the internet, and almost every result is free up to a point. That's not a scam — running conversion and OCR costs money — but the interesting question is where each one stops, and what you give up in exchange. Here's how to read the free tiers honestly, including ours.
The four ways "free" usually ends
- Page or file caps — free for a page or two, then a watermark, a wait, or a paywall for the rest. Fine for a one-off; painful for a year of statements.
- Row limits — the file converts but truncates after N transactions, which you may not notice until your totals don't reconcile.
- Accuracy floors — the free path is raw OCR with no validation, so amounts can be quietly wrong. Free is worthless if you can't trust the numbers.
- "You're the product" — the genuinely worrying one: some free tools are vague about what happens to the statement you upload. A bank statement is sensitive; free should never mean "we keep your data."
The privacy question matters more here than anywhere
You're handing over a document with your name, balances and every place you spend money. Before using any free converter, check three things: does it state that files are deleted (and when)? Does it redact card and account numbers? Does it ask for your bank login (it never should)? If a tool won't answer those plainly, that's your answer. Our own line is in the privacy policy: card and account numbers are redacted before anything is stored, the original file is deleted within 24 hours, and we never ask for a bank login.
How to convert without paying — or being the product
- Try your bank's own export first. A native CSV/Excel/OFX from online banking is free, exact, and doesn't involve a third party at all — always the best option when it exists. The per-bank guides show where to find it.
- For PDF-only months, use a converter that validates dates and amounts and lets you reconcile against the statement's totals — here's why that's non-negotiable.
- Match the free tier to the job. One statement fits most free tiers; a year of them is where caps bite.
Where we land
Being straight about our own tier: single-charge lookups are free, and a free account converts one statement page every 24 hours — genuinely useful for a one-off, with the privacy terms above applying regardless of plan. Paid plans exist for volume (more pages, bulk uploads), which is the honest trade. If you're comparing options, the full converter comparison weighs the main tools — with our bias declared up front — and the converter itself is here when you want to try it.
