Getting your statement out of ABN AMRO
ABN AMRO's download page in Internet Banking covers both statements and transactions, and leans towards European banking formats rather than consumer ones: alongside PDF and XLS you get MT940 and CAMT.053, the SWIFT and ISO 20022 standards that Dutch accounting software expects. The transaction window is about 18 months, so older history comes out of the PDFs.
Download transactions from Internet Banking
- Log in to ABN AMRO Internet Banking.
- Go to the download page for credit and debit transactions.
- Select the account holder and the type of statement.
- Choose the account if you hold more than one.
- Enter the start and end date for the period you need.
- Tick the statement you want and download it as PDF, TXT, MT940, XLS or CAMT.053.
About 18 months of transactions are available this way.
Pick the right format for your tool
- For a spreadsheet, choose XLS — it opens directly in Excel or Sheets.
- For Dutch accounting software, choose MT940 or CAMT.053, whichever your package lists.
- For a record or an application, choose PDF.
- If you need CSV specifically, convert the XLS or the PDF — ABN AMRO does not offer CSV directly.
Menu wording shifts between app versions; the destinations above stay stable — confirm against ABN AMRO's official help. Statements up to 5 MB / 5,000 rows are supported; card numbers are redacted before storage, the original file is deleted within 24 hours, and reports stay in your dashboard only as long as your plan keeps them.
What ABN AMRO gives you natively
ABN AMRO offers PDF, TXT, MT940, XLS and CAMT.053. There is no plain-CSV option: the spreadsheet route is XLS, and the two machine formats are the banking standards MT940 and CAMT.053 rather than anything consumer-shaped.
How far back you can go
Transaction downloads reach roughly 18 months back. The PDF statement archive covers a longer period, so a multi-year history — for a mortgage application, an accountant or a tax return — is assembled from PDFs rather than from the transaction export.
ABN AMRO statement quirks worth knowing
These are the details that trip people up when a ABN AMRO export doesn't line up with the statement it came from — worth reading before you assume the conversion is wrong.
- MT940 is a SWIFT plain-text standard, not a spreadsheet. Accounting packages read it natively; Excel does not, which is the usual surprise for anyone expecting a CSV.
- CAMT.053 is the ISO 20022 XML successor to MT940. Newer accounting software prefers it; older tools may only accept MT940.
- The transaction download reaches about 18 months back. Older periods come from the PDF statements instead.
- Downloads are driven by an explicit start and end date plus a tick-box per statement, rather than by a single 'export everything' control, so a long history takes several passes.
- Dutch statement descriptors pack structured fields (counterparty IBAN, name, and a payment reference) into one long line, so a naive split on spaces scatters the reference across columns.

Don't just convert it — understand it
The same upload also produces a full analysis of your ABN AMROstatement: every merchant identified with confidence levels, subscriptions with renewal estimates and yearly cost, duplicate and price-rise flags, bank & FX fees, and a printable report. That's the part a plain converter can't do.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open my ABN AMRO MT940 file in Excel?
Because MT940 is not a spreadsheet. It is a SWIFT plain-text statement format that accounting software reads natively, and Excel has no idea what to do with it. If you want a spreadsheet, download XLS instead, or convert the MT940 or the PDF statement.
MT940 or CAMT.053 — which should I choose?
CAMT.053 is the ISO 20022 XML successor and is what newer accounting packages prefer; MT940 is the older plain-text standard that almost everything still accepts. Check which your software lists, and default to MT940 if it accepts both.
Does ABN AMRO export CSV?
No. The formats offered are PDF, TXT, MT940, XLS and CAMT.053. XLS is the spreadsheet route and opens straight into Excel; if you specifically need CSV, convert the XLS or the PDF statement.
How far back can I download ABN AMRO transactions?
The transaction download reaches about 18 months. Anything older is in the PDF statements, which is where a converter earns its keep — statements older than the download window are the common case for mortgage and accounting requests.
How do I convert a ABN AMRO statement to CSV or Excel?
Download a statement from your ABN AMRO app or online banking (PDF or CSV both work), upload it above, and download the result as CSV, Excel, QIF, OFX or JSON. Every transaction is parsed, and merchants are identified automatically.
Does it work with ABN AMRO PDF statements?
Yes. Structured exports are parsed exactly; PDF layouts go through AI structure analysis, and scanned PDFs are read page-by-page with AI vision — every date and amount is re-validated by code afterwards.
Is my statement safe?
Card and account numbers are redacted before anything is stored, the original file is deleted within 24 hours on every plan, analysed reports stay in your dashboard only for your plan's retention period (24 hours on Free), and we never ask for your bank login.
Is it free?
Converting a statement is free with an account (1 page per 24 hours). Paid plans add more pages, bulk uploads and AI web research on stubborn merchants.
