Why Markdown is the best 'second life' for a PDF
A PDF is frozen; Markdown is workable. Once a document is Markdown you can diff it in Git, search it in Obsidian, publish it in a wiki, or hand it to an AI assistant that reads its headings and tables natively. It's the most portable plain-text format there is — and unlike copy-paste, this conversion keeps the document's structure intact.
Tables survive — that's the hard part
Most PDF-to-text tools flatten tables into space-separated soup. We detect the table, rebuild its grid from the PDF's coordinates, and emit a proper pipe-delimited Markdown table with header separator and escaped cells. Rows stay rows; columns stay columns; the table renders in every Markdown viewer.
PDF to Markdown for Notion, Obsidian and wikis
Notion and Obsidian both paste Markdown natively — headings become blocks, tables become tables. For a docs site or wiki, commit the .md straight into the repo. Going the other way: Markdown back to PDF
Converting to Markdown is often step one of editing a PDF you don't have the source file for. Edit the Markdown as plain text, then use the free Markdown-to-PDF tool (/tools/markdown-to-pdf) to print a clean, typeset PDF of the edited version — tables and code blocks intact, text still selectable. That round trip is the practical way to change a PDF without buying a PDF editor.
What about scanned PDFs?
